PORSCHE – Proof Of Rich Spoiled Children Having Everything! Ha!

Mr. Ferdinand Porsche founded Porsche in 1931. In 1934, the German government asked Mr. Porsche to design a “people’s car” (or Volkswagen). He responded with  the Volkswagen Beetle. The Porsche 64 of 1939 used many components from the Beetle. The ’64 has been developed into models like the one at left, that we know now.

Hi everybody!

Porsche convertible tops are among the best that money can buy. Modern Boxsters and 911s tops are made of a product called SonnenlandA5.0. SonnenlandA5.0 is an acoustically enhanced three-ply composite  made of  a surface singed acrylic twill weave outer fabric, a rubber inner layer, and a polyester lining fabric. Pre-1988 911s used a similar fabric called Sonnenland Classic.

Porsche convertible tops are good—really good. They deserve the very very best you can give them in care and maintenance. They are just not as carefree as the rest of the hard metal and plastic components of a car. The surface (acrylic twill) must be waterproofed and treated with serious UV protection or the sun will gradually destroy it! Without protection the sun will  fade the cloth until it looks like your favorite golf shirt after 53 washings! Worse yet, without UV protection, the UV rays can actually peer through the fabric and start deteriorating the rubber liner!! Have you ever left an elastic on a window sill in the sun? Yep, it turns into brittle, useless crap! If that happens to your top —you get wet!

What can be done??

The best way to care for a Porsche cloth convertible soft top is with regular care, cleaning and maintenance. While there are many car care products out there, one product line from Europe stands well above the rest and is the only “recommended” one. It is called Renovo®. It is made by a company in the UK called Renovo. It is a safe, gentle but extremely effective line of water-based products made specifically for expensive European cloth tops! These products are completely safe for your car’s paint or clear coat and wipe off easily in case you accidentally get some on the cloth of the soft top.

The proper way to care for a Porsche convertible top is to first, AVOID all products containing silicone or chemicals of any sort! Next, use Renovo products instead. To clean and care for your soft top:

First, get a good scrub brush. Rub it across the back of your hand and if it doesn’t leave a welt or scratches, it’s OK to use on your expensive top. Renovo generally includes a professional detail kit including the right brushes.

Second, apply Renovo Soft Top Canvas Cleaner according to instructions and scrub thoroughly. Rinse the foam and dirt off with a hose and let dry. (Drying is important!) If the top has faded and is unsatisfactory, you can now RE-DYE tops perfectly safely but that is a step that we will cover in future articles.

Third, and this is IMPORTANT, re-waterproof! You can use all those fancy “spray” can products which waste a lot and most contain chemicals, or you can use what they recommend in Europe—Renovo Ultra Proofer! This waterproofer is the one I use on my Corvette regularly. It takes care of ALL your top’s needs. I would never suggest any product that I don’t use on my own cars! UltraProofer provides a very serious UV protectant, or sunblock. Although you can’t compare it to sunscreen that we put on our skin, this product is similar. This keeps the sun from fading your color out and it also prevents the sun from getting at your delicate polymer (rubber) liner! (Remember the elastic band?)!

Waterproofing your convertible top is absolutely crucial to 1)  keep you dry! and 2)  protect your car’s interior from water, mold, and mildew damage! And Renovo Ultra Proofer is the way to go. Here’s what it’ll do for you:

    • It contains an extremely effective mold and mildew inhibitor which is crucial in case you inadvertently store your top down when it is wet or damp! Wheew, have you ever smelled a moldy car???
    • Ultra Proofer waterproofs your top like nothing you have ever seen. The water literally “beads” off your cloth top, the same way it does off a freshly waxed hood!
    • This seal prevents dirt and grime from getting a grip on your fabric. Picture a big deposit from some jerk seagull. Before using Ultra Proofer you would have to scrub like hell to get it off! After Ultra Proofer the soft top surface is so well sealed, you can usually just spray it off with a hose!

So that’s it for now! All you have to do is clean and regularly maintain your top with Renovo, and it should last you 20 or 30 years!  Use the Renovo products here, and you’re good for a couple or three decades. The kits are an especially good solution because they contain everything you need to follow the drill above. Kit A has Renovo Plastic Polish, too, so you can keep your plastic rear view window as transparent as the day it was born! You can read all about that, here.  Order online or call toll-free at 1-888-697-0089.

Oh—BTW—stay out of caustic carwashes with your “baby”. They only have you for a few minutes so their products have to be brutally strong to get the job done quickly. You wouldn’t believe harmful effects of the chemicals and silicone they build up in your top!

That’s it for now—
